Virtualization

VM Manager Guide

Connect to VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V to track VMs, hosts, licenses, and security issues.

VM Manager Features

VM Manager provides deep visibility into your virtualization infrastructure, helping you optimize licensing and identify security risks.

VMware vSphere

Connect to vCenter or ESXi hosts to discover VMs, hosts, and licenses.

Microsoft Hyper-V

Connect to Hyper-V hosts to track virtual machines and Windows Server licensing.

License Utilization

Track VMware and Hyper-V license usage, capacity, and expiration dates.

Security Scanning

Detect vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and security risks in your VM infrastructure.

1

Deploy a VM Manager Agent

Install the agent that will connect to your VM infrastructure

Before adding VM connections, you need to deploy a VM Manager agent on a server that has network access to your vCenter or Hyper-V hosts.

1

Download the VM Manager Agent

Go to Downloads and download the VM Manager agent for your platform

2

Install on a Management Server

Deploy on a Windows or Linux server that can reach your vCenter/ESXi or Hyper-V hosts

3

Verify Connection

The agent will appear in the VM Connections sidebar once connected

Network Requirements

VMware: Port 443 to vCenter/ESXi. Hyper-V: Port 5985/5986 (WinRM) to Hyper-V hosts.

2

Add a VMware Connection

Connect to vCenter or ESXi hosts

1

Click the + Button

Click the + button in the VM Connections sidebar

2

Select VMware vSphere

Choose VMware vSphere from the provider selection

3

Select VM Manager Agent

Choose which agent will manage this connection

4

Enter Connection Details

Provide the following information:

  • Connection Name - Friendly name (e.g., "Production vCenter")
  • vCenter/ESXi Host - Hostname or IP address
  • Port - Default 443
  • Datacenter - Optional, for vCenter
  • Username - vSphere admin account
  • Password - Account password
5

Test & Create

The connection is tested automatically before creation. If successful, VM and license data will be synced.

Recommended Permissions

Use a read-only vSphere role with permission to view VMs, hosts, datastores, and licenses. This is sufficient for discovery and doesn't require admin access.

3

Add a Hyper-V Connection

Connect to Microsoft Hyper-V hosts

1

Select Microsoft Hyper-V

Choose Hyper-V from the provider selection

2

Enter Connection Details

Provide the following:

  • Connection Name - Friendly name
  • Hyper-V Host - Hostname or IP
  • Port - Default 5985 (WinRM)
  • Domain - AD domain (optional)
  • Username - Admin account
  • Password - Account password
3

Configure Sync Intervals (Optional)

Expand "Sync Intervals (Advanced)" to customize:

  • VM Scan Interval - Default 60 minutes
  • Metrics Interval - Default 5 minutes
  • License Scan Interval - Default 24 hours
  • Security Scan Interval - Default 6 hours
4

Infrastructure Overview

Monitor your VM environment

The main dashboard shows aggregated stats from all your VM connections.

Total VMs

Count of all virtual machines with running/stopped breakdown

Total Hosts

ESXi hosts and Hyper-V servers

Total vCPUs

Allocated virtual CPUs across all VMs

Total Memory

Allocated RAM in GB

Click on "Total VMs" or "Total Hosts" to navigate to detailed VM and host lists.

5

License Utilization

Track VMware and Hyper-V licensing

The License Utilization section shows all discovered licenses with usage metrics.

Utilization Tracking

Visual bars show license utilization percentage. Green = healthy, Orange = high, Red = over-utilized

Expiration Alerts

Licenses expiring within 90 days are flagged. Expired licenses show in red.

License Details

View license name, edition, type, capacity units, and masked license keys

6
